History

Launch of Philadelphia was founded in 1986 with a mission of empowering Philadelphians through community and education. Originally known as Communities in Schools of Philadelphia, we were part of the largest stay-in-school network in the nation. While our name has changed, our goal remains the same: to provide resources to Philadelphians in their schools and communities to help them succeed. Over the years, we have spearheaded many impactful programs, including operating an alternative high school and partnering with the School District of Philadelphia to provide social work services to students. In 2020, we separated from the Communities in Schools national network to gain the freedom and flexibility needed to better address the specific needs of our Philadelphia community.

Our President & CEO

Nyne Sellers became involved in a local community center and looked for ways that members of a community could band together to make a difference. Neighbors helping neighbors in communities across the country.

She partnered with her first local St. Louis community center in 2017, and our community of doers and helpers has only grown from there.

“Starting a nonprofit dedicated to empowering Philadelphians through community and education has been a lifelong dream. Thanks to our dedicated staff, generous supporters, and caring volunteers, we’ve been able to touch so many lives. I’m excited to see the good we’ll accomplish together in the future!”
